Typhoon strength by region
Typhoons affecting the Korean Peninsula will be the first to affect the southern part of the peninsula as they are created in the sea, located in the lower part of the peninsula, and moved toward the Korean Peninsula. Since the typhoon weakened as it passed through land, most of the typhoons in North Korea were expected to be weak. In other words, the following analysis was performed with the hypothesis that a relatively strong typhoon will affect Seogwipo and a weak typhoon will affect Seonbong.
Picture 1 Weather Chart of [CHAN-HOM]
Let’s look at the case of Typhoon [CHAN-HOM].
First of all, if you check the weather chart above, you can see that CHAN-HOM hit North Korea on 7/13 after going through the West Sea from 7/11~7/12. We can also see CHAN-HOM weakening to cyclone and disappearing as it lands in North Korea. In addition, if you look at the total daily precipitation data of Seogwipo and Seonbong given by the Korea Meteorological Administration, you can see that Seogwipo received 95.1 mm of rain on 7/11, 61.1 mm on 7/12, and 0 mm on 7/13 and 0 mm on 7/14 and Seonbong received 0 mm of rain on 7/11, 6 mm on 7/12, and 96 mm on 7/13 and 0 mm on 7/14. In other words, it rained 156.2 millimeters in Seogwipo and 102 millimeters in Seonbong during the 7/11~7/14 when CHAN-HOM affected the Korean Peninsula.
Picture 2 Weather Chart of [LINGLING]
The same situation can be confirmed for the recent Typhoon [LINGLING].
Typhoon LINGLING sprayed strong storms in Seogwipo with maximum wind speeds of 12.4 m/s, instantaneous maximum wind speeds of 22.0 m/s and a total precipitation of 61 mm. Afterwards, it traveled through Pyongyang to Hamgyeong-do via Hwanghae-do and penetrated North Korea. Although the damage was relatively more severe than the previous typhoons, the absolute extent of the damage was smaller than that of Seogwipo. In particular, the typhoon's intensity is weakened as it moves northeast at a rapid pace after landing in Ongjin County, South Hwanghae-do. After analyzing two typhoon cases of Chan-Hom and Lingling, it was confirmed that the forces weakened as the typhoon progressed from the south to the north of the Korean Peninsula. This shows that the southern part of the Korean Peninsula (Seogwipo) has a greater impact from the typhoon than the northern part of the Korean Peninsula (Sonbong).
